Multiple Teams · McDonald’s Coach’s Corner: Ashley Harbin

The McDonald’s Coach’s Corner will highlight a different coach in the Jasper City School System every week. This week’s coach is Head Cross Country Coach, Ashley Harbin.

Coach Harbin has been in our system for eleven years, but this is her first season as Head Cross Country Coach. She brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to training runners in our system. She has an extensive background in competitive running at the highest level, and values the lessons, experiences and opportunities that running can provide. We are excited to have Coach Harbin and her family as part of our athletic department.

Tell us about your Family: I am married to my best friend, Jeremy Harbin. We have two children, Auston (11) and Ellie Bryant (2). We enjoy spending time traveling, especially if it’s to somewhere warm and sunny.

What is your Educational Background?: I graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Elementary Education. I received my Masters in Elementary Education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

What is your teaching Background? Where have you taught in the past? What subjects?: I have been teaching for 11 years. After graduating, I got a job at T.R. Simmons Elementary School, my elementary school when I was a kid. It was nice to be back home. I taught for 4 years in fourth grade. The past 7 years I have had the opportunity to teach with my mom in third grade. This year, I transferred to Memorial Park Elementary School and I am teaching PE. I absolutely love it!

Describe your Playing Experience (High School/ College) I attended Walker High School and competed in track and cross country all four years. Upon graduation I ran cross country at the University of Alabama. ROLL TIDE!

Who is your Mentor?: My mother is most definitely my mentor. As a child I always got to help her in her classroom. When I was in high school, I got the opportunity to be a teacher’s aide for her. I was honored when my principal asked me to move from fourth grade and teach along side her in third grade. We enjoyed team teaching. I am very blessed I got the opportunity to learn from one of the best teachers in the Jasper City School System.

What is your Favorite Vacation Spot?: Seagrove Beach.

Favorite Spare Time Activities: In my spare time, I am always running. It is my passion. I began running in 7th grade and I couldn’t imagine not running. Most recently, I have been training for an upcoming marathon in January. I am hoping to qualify for the Boston Marathon.

Favorite Music/ Band/ Group: I do not have a favorite music/band group. I actually love a little of everything, but I most enjoy Christian music.

Favorite McDonald’s Meal: Big Mac Meal

Message to Our Community: Thank you to all who have supported, given their time to help, and encouraged the Walker Cross Country team this season. We appreciate you! Go VIKES!
