Boys Varsity Tennis, Girls Varsity Tennis · Jasper boys tennis team beats defending state champ Florence; Girls and Boys teams beat Homewood


Jasper’s boys tennis team continued its hot start to the season on Wednesday, taking down defending Class 6A state champion Florence 5-4 at Valley Park.

The Vikings won three singles matches and a pair of doubles matches with the No. 1 team of Tyler Banks and Ben Hicks earning a key 10-8 victory.

The No. 3 team of John Bertoldi and Grayson Barber won 10-1, and in singles play, No. 3 Mason Woodman picked up a 10-7 win, No. 4 Bertoldi won 10-5 and No. 6 Jack Bryan won 10-1.

No. 1 Banks dropped an 11-10 match, No. 2 Hicks fell 10-6, No. 5 Barber lost 10-2 and the No. 2 doubles team of Woodman and Bryan lost 11-9.

Jasper’s girls dropped an 8-1 decision to Florence.

No. 3 Sophia Poolos earned a 10-5 win in singles play.

Both Jasper teams picked up wins over Homewood at Valley Park on Tuesday.

Jasper’s boys blanked the Patriots 9-0. Singles winners were No. 1 Banks (6-0, 6-1), No. 2 Hicks (6-0, 6-1), No. 3 Woodman (6-0, 6-1), No. 4 Bertoldi (6-0, 6-1), No. 5 Barber (6-0, 6-0) and No. 6 Bryan (6-0 ,6-0). In doubles, the No. 1 team of Banks and Hicks won 10-1, the No. 2 team of Woodman and Bryan won 10-0 and the No. 3 team of Bertoldi and Barber won 10-0.

The Jasper girls won 5-4 over Homewood.

Singles winners were No. 3 Sophia Poolos (6-3, 6-4), No. 5 Lillian Griffin (6-0, 6-2) and No. 6 Gracie Spivy (6-0, 6-3).

The No. 2 doubles team of Mary-Alice Pearson and Jenna Brown won 10-4 and the No. 3 team of Morgan Aldridge and Griffin won 10-5.
